According to Hawaiian singing sensation, Lani Lalita Star, a voice that is imbalanced can communicate unwanted messages. And a voice that is harmonically balanced can resonate to instill enthusiasm, inspiration, and captivate the imagination… creating wealth and success in all areas of our lives.
Women’s World Magazine voted Lani as one of the youngest and most successful woman entrepreneurs in Hawaii. After getting such great accolades in her 20s, she has maintained a solid track record.
Recently, Lani trained an American Idol finalist and over the past year she launched her newest business helping people excel using the power of their voice.
Lani explains that we take our ability to communicate through our voice for granted. “We speak all day long at work, at home and socially. But do we truly understand the power of our inner and outer words and vocal intonations and what effects they have over others, as well as ourselves?”
Recent breakthrough?
Lani: Every day is a break through!
Role models?
Lani: Debbie Ford, Oprah, Louise Hay, Marianne Williamson, the Hendricks, and our dear friends Rev. Michael Beckwith, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, and Joel Osteen!
Career mantra?
Lani: Embrace the moment! Love life, love all; be grateful for what is. In Hawaiian, we call it Ho’oponopono! Harmony and forgiveness are the secrets of true healing. The ancient practice of our people is the absolutely amazing process of Ho’oponopono. We all can be powerful agents of change.
What is unique or special about your business that gives it an edge over your competitors?
Lani: As opposed to telling people what they need to think or what they need to do, I address their inner intention and the character or color of the sound their voice produces. As a result, their internal state of consciousness changes with the flavor of their vocal production.
All it takes is a subtle shift in their voice to bring about an abundance of success in all areas of life. These vocal changes are simple to learn and create a dramatic, positive, powerful effect in all areas of one’s daily interactions at home or in the office.
My programs also feature the most sophisticated, innovative vocal techniques used in the music and film industries. Anyone can utilize these simple techniques and apply these methods to everyday communications.
My method gives them the ability to be more dynamic, charismatic, and persuasive; it helps build their self-confidence and increases their attractiveness to others.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Lani: My mother was a world-class entrepreneur, jeweler, and fashion designer who was also an operatic coloratura soprano. Her dying wish was for me to give my voice, my music, and my message to the world.
Being raised in Hawaii and of Hawaiian ancestry, my kapunas (elders) and kumus (hula dance teachers) told me to share the magic of these islands with others and said I was gifted with the charisma to do so. They said, “Give them entrance into the true sense of ‘Aloha,’ which is a prayer of wellness and well-being and a blessing for them on their daily path by invoking a prayer of love.”
I help people live their best lives now by utilizing their voice as a vehicle of empowerment.
What if any personal challenges inspired you to launch your business?
Lani: The loss of my mother sparked my desire to give the gifts that had been given to me by her. I felt an urgency to share my knowledge that anyone can experience a fuller, more successful, and more meaningful life now. Many of my students and dear friends, including Elizabeth Buyer (Miss Hawaii), Danny Akaka (son of Senator D. Akaka), and Marla Maples (star of “The X Wives’ Club”), encouraged me for years to create a program that would allow others access to my teachings.
Were there any challenges that you experienced along the way that you had to overcome?
Inevitably, every entrepreneur will face challenges in business start-up; the secret to success is how one deals with and overcomes these challenges.
I utilized vocal exercises to shift and channel my thoughts toward success. In other words, I harness my ability to overcome through the power of my voice.
Did you need to have a certain mindset to achieve success?
Lani: Yes, it requires daily practice, like music. When starting out, you must find something you are excited and passionate about because you have to absorb your consciousness fully. So much so that, wherever you look, whoever you meet, you will start to see how that situation or person can be used in a good and positive way to take you one step closer to your goals.
I found I was using many analogies relating to music and singing to help find the inner strength, confidence, and personal power to live a happier, more prosperous, and more productive life.
Have you noticed certain advantages to being an entrepreneur versus a day job?
Lani: Absolutely! The hours may be long in the start-up phase, but if you know how to delegate and not get tied down to your company, you can reap a fantastic lifetime worth of profits in the form of self-satisfaction, lasting financial gains, and self worth.
Did you have a mentor to help you get started? If so how did they assist?
Lani: Yes, the main person was my mother. When I was young, she would always say, “Just believe in yourself, and learn as much as you can from everyone in the field you are interested in, and most importantly, find the best and learn from them! I did this in music and in life and found the teachings of Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer, and women like Louise Hay, Oprah, Marianne Williamson, and Debbie Ford. They are all people that I still turn to for inspiration.
What ways have you found to be most effective in marketing your product or service to get sales?
Lani: I use a marketing mix of traditional ads, flyers, and mailers, in addition to the Internet, email newsletters, and the great folks at Wasabi Publicity, Inc.!
What tips can you give others who want to embrace their dream but don’t have the confidence or feel they don’t have what it takes to succeed?
Lani: You must first see that being an entrepreneur is an art form. It is a creative process; it’s fun, exciting, and interesting. In addition you must surround yourself with people that resonate with your dream, people you can dream with! And you have to find the tools, the exercises, to help create that success; find a great teacher!
What would you tell someone who wants to be an entrepreneur but doesn’t know what they want to do or where to begin to get their idea up and making money?
Lani: In regards to being an entrepreneur, review what topics turn your creative juices on. Find a good mentor or a few of them. Find a subject you are excited about.
If you want a more fundamental approach, then review the market place. See what items are best sellers. See if you can make them a bit better or add something into them to make the item more gourmet or add more value appeal to the consumer. I also highly recommend the television show “The Big Idea” on CNBC for inspiration.
In addition, get fantastic publications like “Entrepreneur,” where there is a warehouse of information and inspiration to draw from.
What’s next for you?
Lani: Bruce BecVar and I have a CD due out in November of this year. Our music is being featured in the film “Wake Up and Live,” which also features our dear friend Wayne Dyer, as well as many of the cast from the hit film “The Secret.” Bruce and I are also featured in the film. Additionally, we have a screenplay that is being reviewed for production.
